What Is Organic Rye Grain?

Rye is a cereal grain closely related to barley and wheat, it looks similar and has similar applications but it does differ in taste and in makeup. 

It may be hard to find Rye products in Supermarkets as Wheat generally reigns supreme however Foods made from whole rye truly are worth the effort looking for, not only for their rich, hearty taste, but for their numerous health benefits too.

Fun Fact: Rye is used extensively in the alcohol industry as its used to brew Whiskeys & Vodkas...so even if you haven't tried Rye as a food, you may have unknowingly tried it as a drink instead!


Benefits of Organic Rye Grain

Rye is a hearty source of manganese, fibre, phosphorus, copper, pantothenic acid and magnesium. If you are pondering the reason its so much healthier than refined wheat then look no further.

This is because it is difficult to separate the germ and bran from the endosperm of rye, meaning rye retains a larger quantity of nutrients than other similar grains on a weight for weight basis. Rye grain itself has plenty of uses that will keep you busy and other preparations such as Rye flour that opens up an entirely new chapter in baking.

Cooking with Organic Rye Grain

Rye is commonly used to make rye bread, which is denser and more compact than the equivalent loaf made with a wheat flour, as the gluten in rye is less elastic. Other than bread, casseroles and stews can only be made better with the inclusion of rye and you can even boil the groats and use them as a rice substitute in your favourite dishes; It really does make for a pleasant change!

So there really is no good reason not to use rye, especially as Like most grains it is available throughout the year. Lucky you eh?

Instructions For Use: 

Dark and earthy flavoured rice alternative. Perfect for adding to soups and casseroles. Can be ground into flour. To Cook: Soak overnight, then drain. Bring pan to a boil, add grain, and then reduce the heat. Cover and simmer for 45-60 minutes or until tender.

Storage Instructions:

Store in a cool dry place, away from direct sunlight, heat and damp.
