Nigella seeds also known as black caraway, black cumin or kalonji seeds, come from the pods of the annual flowering plant Nigella sativa native to south and southwest Asia.

The seeds have a distinct aroma and smoky taste that is said to have notes of onion, cumin, and oregano.
