Barley flakes provide one of the ways to enjoy the many nutritious and healthy benefits of barley! They can be eaten hot or cold, and are an amazing alternative to oat flakes, nuttier, slightly sweeter flavour and chewier texture. Yum!
To create barley flakes, whole grain barley is first de-hulled, then usually hydrated through steaming. Next it is gently. Briefly and precisely heated, before passing through a rolling mill and then cooled before packaging.
Why Should I Get Barley Flakes ?
This whole process stabilises the grain, which means that the enzymes are neutralised to avoid oxidation and rancidity. The heating converts the starches to more simple sugars, which makes them more easily digested, but leaves the barley's vitamin and mineral content intact, so they stay healthy for you.
Add raisins, cranberries, or other dried fruits to the flakes as they are being cooked. The fruits will plump and help to sweeten the cereal. You can mix with dried fruits, nuts, and seeds for homemade granola's, muesli's, or trail mixes.
